During the past century European colonialism was superceded by an American empire, and it has been widely assumed that the resulting new globalism took the world "beyond geography," Neil Smith debunks that assumption, arguing that American globalism was pieced together as part of a powerful geographical vision. The story of this new worldview unfolds through an account of the career of Isaiah Bowman (1878-1950), who, as "Frankin D. Roosevelt's geographer," was present at the creation of U.S. liberal foreign policy. Neil Smith is Distinguished Professor of Anthropology and Geography and Director of the Center for Place, Culture and Politics at the Graduate Center, City University of New York. His recent books include Uneven Development (1990) and New Urban Frontier (1996).
