Description

The extent of the discrimination practised against the Buraku communities is one of the most sensitive issues facing the Japanese government and the social coherence of contemporary Japan. It is not surprising that there is a paucity of material in both Japanese and English which this book - a translation of Kitaguchi's 1980s' study - aims to redress. Developed as a question and answer field research report into the status of Buraku people today, the book also looks at the wider issues of prejudice as found within Japanese society, from old people to women, ethnicity and nationality. Because the fieldwork was undertaken in the late 1970s, this book provides a valuable resource for a comparative case-study into the nature of Buraku discrimination over a twenty-year period - the author providing a detailed update in his introductory chapter.
