Recent college graduate Jack Ducksenhousser is very fascinated with the supernatural and creepy things that go bump in the night. However, he has never actually experienced anything paranormal but all that is about to change. The story begins with Jack moving into his own apartment. While he is moving in, he meets a mysterious warmhearted young woman, named Nikki, who claims to be endlessly tormented every night by a sinister presence. Max Rathengor is the cruelest, most manipulative, soul devouring demon in the Midwest. He was human once, but by pushing his psychic abilities far past anything that was dreamt possible he has become nearly omnipotent. But there is a high price to pay for near immortality. He has to drink from the immortal souls of the wicked to sustain his own life. During the day he creates confusion and chaos in the unfortunate minds of anyone who happen to cross his path. When the sun sets, and the blackest shadows creep across the land, he sends out the dark side of his mind to feast on the living while they sleep. Nikki's dark past has awoken the thirst in Max and now he has his sights set on her. As Jack gets to know Nikki better, more and more secrets from her past are revealed. Max continually tries to convince Jack that his girlfriend Nikki is not the sweet heart she is pretending to be. Nikki believes that her only chance for survival against Max's mental assaults is if she learns how to astral project. Jack and Nikki realize they have to increase their own mental abilities if they wish to challenge Max on the battlefield. A romance starts to blossom between Jack and Nikki. As Jack falls more in love, he has to make a decision to either fight alongside the girl he loves in a colossal psychic battle of wills or let Nikki's shadowy pursuer tear apart her eternal soul.
