Description

The market town of Arnold gained its market status in 1968. As a suburb of Nottingham, it is rich in both history and heritage. With a varied range of restaurants and shops situated in the town centre, the area has a buzzing culture and community. Once associated with its hosiery factories, Arnold was a key contender in the knitting industry in the nineteenth century and was the setting for the 1811 'Luddite riots', in which knitters from the village broke into workshops and disabled the machinery and frames used for the production of lace cloth. Photographer and local enthusiast Sally Outram invites readers on a journey through time, detailing this town's intricate history and culture that some may not be aware of. Learn about the now closed railway station, once known as 'Daybrook and Arnold', and visit the town's most notable landmark the Home Ales building, among many other interesting escapades, in this influential and collection of photographs and memories.

Author Biography

Born and raised in the beautiful county of Nottinghamshire, and being just a closely situated to the historical counties of Lincolnshire, Leicestershire and Yorkshire, Sally has a keen passion for writing and photography. Born in 1964, she has lived in Nottinghamshire for most of that time. She is a Freelance photographer for a local newspaper, which she loves. It enables her to really get into the heart of the community and record events through her images, which in turn will become part of our historical archives and heritage in years to come. In her spare time there's nothing she enjoys more than putting on her walking boots and heading off to the hills. In 2011 she followed in the footsteps of Alfred Wainwright, walking 200 miles in 11 days, from St Bees to Robin Hood's Bay. It was an incredible challenge and an experience she will never forget.
