Marking acclaimed Hong Kong writer/director Wong Kar-Wai's directorial debut, As Tears Go By forgoes the familiar images of frenetic violence and non-stop action typical of contemporary Hong Kong film and replaces them with a socially relevant contemporary urban drama, an atmospheric, sombre and contemplative portrait of failed connection and unrequited longing. A low level triad member, Ah Wah has a hot-tempered little brother, Fly, who can't keep out of trouble, constantly in need of being bailed out by his protector. Ah Wah is super-cool, but lacks the ambition to rise in the ranks of triad society and once he finds himself drawn romantically to his cousin, he decides he wants out. But it's not going to be easy. Though he has reached a decision on his future direction, it quickly transpires that Ah Wah must bail out his brother one final time
