Great to see this new edition of Blood Bowl released after years of rumours
that it was coming. Now granted, I haven't played a game of Blood Bowl in some
six or seven years, but a quick read through of the rulebook confirms that the
rules have largely remained the same and any changes should be minor.
Considering how well-regarded the BB rules are, this is fantastic news. The
minis are beautiful and, when compared to the plastic figures in the previous
edition's boxed set, really show how far GW's plastic kits have come. The most
noteworthy thing about the teams is that they are now on 30mm bases, and as a
result the pitch board has larger squares, and of course this also means that
the range ruler is a different size. The upshot is that you can play this new
version with your old BB minis, but that's as far as compatibility with the
previous edition goes. There's definitely been a push to eliminate cardboard
tokens, and you'll find counters on the model sprues to track turns, rerolls and
touchdowns. There's even a couple of d16's included (very unusual die type
there) to select random players from a team. Really the only issue I have with
the new game, especially as a player of previous editions, is only having rules
for two teams in the box. I've got Dwarfs, Chaos, Dark Elves and Undead that I'd
love to put on the field but they're going to have to wait it seems. All in all
though, very impressive relaunch to an incredibly fun game. Looking forward to
getting some games in soon!
