This is a practical guide for vets faced with ageing animals. Starting from the important standpoint that the subject of geriatrics presents topics and problems all of its own, the book does not simply present overviews of each subject as they relate to the younger adult, with aspects relating to the older animal tacked on. Instead, it covers topics that relate specifically to the geriatric patient. Initial chapters describe the ageing process and the special considerations that apply to geriatric disease. Data on age-related incidence of diseases is also presented. The following chapters consider the specific topics of nutrition, ophthalmology, renal and cardiac disease, orthopaedic problems and cancer management. Techniques also vary with geriatric patients, so chapters discuss interpretation of radiographs, anaesthesia, the use of therapeutic agents, screening programmes, behavioural problems and health promotion in older animals.
