Almost 40 per cent of American adults aged 65 and over spend some time in a nursing home and the use of nursing homes among all ethnic groups is increasing dramatically every year. The decision to place a family member in a nursing home is always difficult, more so when a family comes from an ethnic group with a strong tradition of filial responsibility. Yet little has been written about the stresses that families experience in making such a decision. This book describes the experiences of 75 African American and Afro-Caribbean, white Jewish and Latina/o residents and offers personal accounts of relatives and friends who have been caregivers. Integrating largely qualitative original research with quantitative data and theoretical information from other sources, the author presents a new perspective on how caregiving varies across diverse ethnic backgrounds and dispels numerous myths about how various ethnic groups handle nursing home placements.
