Description

In the past, international schools have responded to challenging behaviors in punitive ways. Consequences for specific infractions (cheating, stealing, etc.) are outlined in policy manuals and punishments are meted out accordingly. While the punishments outlined in policy facilitate efficiency and consistency in making decisions, this approach may not provide the best learning opportunities for the offending student or for the school. Behavior is influenced by a number of variables, including physiological considerations, upbringing, cultural influences, prior experiences and emotional state, among others; and students may need different responses to support the development of behavior that is more acceptable in a school setting. In this monograph, NFI recommends a more compassionate approach to managing behavioral challenges in international schools.
