Rather than a ranking system based on occupational prestige, this book explains social stratification through political events and decisions. Using analyses of Russia, France, the United States and England, Burrage claims that class stems from the habitual relationship between state and civil society and, remarkably, is undermined by free markets.

Author Biography:

MICHAEL BURRAGE has taught at the London School of Economics and Political Science, UK, and has been a visiting professor in Brazil and Japan. He has also been a research fellow at Harvard University, USA; Free University Berlin, Germany; Uppsala University, Sweden; and University of California, Berkeley, USA. He is currently an independent researcher.
