Description

Built between the fourteenth and sixteenth centuries, the castle has been home to the Gilbert family for most of the last 600 years. Sir Humphrey Gilbert (1539-83) was coloniser of Newfoundland and half-brother to Sir Walter Raleigh. Given to the National Trust in 1951 by Commander Walter Raleigh Gilbert, the castles is lived in by his son and daughter-in-law.
