Description

Desiring Life is the third in Norvene Vest's series presenting core themes from Benedictine spirituality for people living in the world. The first, No Moment Too Small, explored silence, holy reading, and prayer; the second, Friend of the Soul, discussed work and faith by using the Benedictine principles of vocation, stewardship, and obedience. Desiring Life addresses issues of relationship, particularly our relationship to the world (wisdom); to ourselves (virtue); to each other (ethics); and to God (vision). Vest guides the reader through these themes, using the insight of St Benedict to translate biblical and early Christian insights into the common parlance of life today. The book's audience is adult Christians who are seeking to deepen their faith, appealing especially to those who have already discovered Benedictine spirituality as a valuable resource. It will also attract those who genuinely desire to live with integrity and compassion, but who are discouraged by the growing gap between public ethics and narrow self-interest. How can we live fully and well? What sort of people should we try to be? What should we seek? Each chapter describes the problem, shows its connection to contemporary questions, and addresses it through some part of Benedict's rule of life.
