Description

This work examines the involvement of major development NGOs in advocacy and addresses questions of legitimacy, effectiveness, role and strategy. An international grassroots advocacy is becoming more vocal, thanks to new communication technologies. It examines who NGOs represent and to whom they are accountable; the practical impact that high-level advocacy has on the lives of people living in poverty; whether NGOs should try to combine funding and advocacy; and whether NGOs are too readily seduced by agencies like the World Bank or by the corporate sector.

Author Biography:

Deborah Eade was Editor-in-Chief of Development in Practice from 1991 to 2010, prior to which she worked for 10 years in Latin America. She is now an independent writer on development and humanitarian issues, based near Geneva.
