I read the cover before I bought this, and it was the whole concept that intrigued me. Particularly from the end of the Peter Davison era, through the Colin Baker era of Doctor Who, there were accusations of excessive violence levelled against the show. So, this episode seemed to be a response to that, the Doctor needing to land on a planet that was entertained by gratuitous violence.

“How would the Doctor handle it?” – I wondered. Without spoiling the plot, I wonder if the BBC took notice, because their solution for Doctor Who itself was not too dissimilar.

There are better Doctor Who episodes to buy, but if you love Colin Baker, and Peri (Nicola Bryant), then by all means, go for it.

On the planet Varos, prosoners and guards alike are subject to punishment, wheich are then broadcast to the masses as entertainment. For the Doctor, Varos is the only hope for him to locate the rare mineral Zeiton-7, which powers his ailing Tardis, but when he and Peri arrive, they are caught up in events beyond their control. Freeing the rebel leader Jondar and incurring the wrath of the sinister alien Sil are just the beginnings of their ordeal. Hunted through the concealed terrors of the punishment dome, the doctor becomes the subject to Varos's latest TV entertainment. But this is one show where he is not expected to survive beyond the cliffhanger.
