The role of the doubleheader as a celebration of holidays and as a Sunday event is explained, as well as its crucial role in enabling Major League Baseball to survive as an economic entity during the Great Depression and World War II.

Author Biography:

A member of the Society for American Baseball Research, Charlie Bevis has written for Nine, The Cooperstown Symposium, The National Pastime and Base Ball. He is also the author of several other McFarland baseball books. He is an adjunct instructor of English at Rivier College and lives in Chelmsford, Massachusetts.
