Description

Sharing books at home is an integral part of the socialisation of young children into literacy. In an original and wide-ranging study, Rhian Jones documents the unique contribution which picturebooks and stories make to the development of the infant mind between the ages of nine months and two years, using videorecorded data to chart children's progress. She then analyses the connections between these very early behaviours and subsequent achievements in literacy. The work integrates research from a number of disciplines: linguistics, psychology, literary, psychoanalysis and anthropology, to draw out the different levels at which book-based interactions may be seen to be 'working'. Issues of general theoretical relevance to early childhood are comprehensively examined for the first time in a reading setting such as language acquisition, the construction and expression of the infant self, and the relation between affect and achievement. lWritten in an accessible and readable style, Emerging Patterns of Literacy will be of interest to specialists in developmental psychology, language acquisition, literacy and early childhood development, teachers, speech therapists and child psychotherapists. l Rhian Jones is a member of the Child Language Acquisition and Pathology Research Group at the University of Paris Rene' Decartes.
