Young Jesse Pomeroy was outwardly repellant in appearance, but inside he was deformed beyond imagination. He abducted and tortured child victims, and he eventually moved on to murder. He was arrested in 1874 and a spree of monstrous violence came to an end. This book examines the hows and whys of this vicious juvenile crime, which were as relevant then, in the "Age of Innocence", as they are now.

Harold Schechter is Professor at Queen's College, The City University of New York. Renowned for his true-crime writing, he is the author of five non-fiction books: BESTIAL, DEVIANT, DERANGED, DEPRAVED and THE A TO Z ENCYCLOPEDIA OF SERIAL KILLERS.
