Description

The Crisis of Modernity is the most comprehensive introduction to modern and contemporary French culture. Bringing together history, literature, and popular culture, this will be the foundational textbook for courses in French Studies. Each section begins with a chronological narrative, which covers the main historical events of the period as well as the interaction between the arts, literature and everyday life. The second part includes a selection of primary documents in translation, which serve as references and illustrations for the historical narrative. Each document will be thoroughly contextualized and analyzed. Documents include historical, archival texts, poetry and other literary texts, and examples of French popular culture. The result is a comprehensive and innovative volume, which will provide students and general readers with an introduction to modern France

Author Biography:

Roger Celestin and Eliane Dalmolin are both Professors of French at the University of Connecticut, and co-chairs of the French Studies Program. They have worked extensively in the area of 19th and 20th-century French culture and literature and are the co-editors of the only academic journal exclusively dedicated to contemporary France published in the USA. Having lived and worked in both 'words', the authors are academically and personally well versed in French and Francophone modernity, as well as with its American perception. The fact that they have been teaching, for close to six years, the course for which this book could be used, makes them acutely aware of the specific needs of its potential student audience.
