Description

This study documents the historical development of the Puerto Rican community in the USA. Expanded in this edition to bring developments up to the present day, it traces the growth of the early Puerto Rican settlements - "colonias" - into the vibrant and well-defined community of today. The author places the Puerto Rican diaspora in the broader context of American and Latin American history. She explores the multitude of forces that propelled emigration. Her work also examines the formal organizational structures and institutions along with the informal ways Puerto Rican settlers adapted and maintained their culture and traditions in their new home. She pays particularly close attention to the pivotal role of women and of grassroots organizations in sustaining the community.
