Description

From Farm to Field is a collection of WWII Veteran's first hand accounts of combat experiences in the war against the Nazi's Ardennes Offensive in December 1944. The Battle of the Bulge would become one of the largest land battles fought in WWII by Americans, eventually stretching across an 80 mile front embroiling over a million young soldiers in a struggle to the death. In their own words, meticulously captured first hand by the author, the veterans describe what it meant to leave the farms of Kansas and face the horrors of the field of battle in Europe. From the war in Africa and Italy to Omaha Beach and the Nuremburg trials, the book is a compilation of hundreds of hours of individual interviews with the Veterans, filled with riveting accounts of the harsh winter of 1944 and 1945.To most of us, the War is an historical event where maps and strategies mask the human hardships, terror and sacrifice of those who lived it. Their narratives describe leaving home, arriving on the battle front, frost bite and constant threat of death and the grim shock of freeing the concentration camps. They tell of being POW's, paratroopers, tankers, reconnaissance troops and soldier mechanics and first hand accounts of Patton. Many became very dear friends and travel companions, visiting their fields of battle in Luxemburg, Belgium, France and Germany where we walked in their foxholes and viewed the Bridge at Remagen. We must never forget their sacrifices. To them I dedicate this book.
