Description

This, the second volume of a planned three, tells tale of the first five months of the light cruiser HMAS Sydney's war time service. In those first few months she was to be present as Australia and New Zealand wrestled the German Kaisers Pacific islands away from his colonial forces. Then she was called on to escort one of the biggest convoys of the war, as the ANZAC's made their passage to Egypt. But on route destiny was to bring her to the remote Coco Island's and a ship-to-ship battle with Germany's most successful light cruiser of both wars, SMS Emden. The narrative leaves her laying alongside in Gibraltar, where the forthcoming volume III will accompany her as she hunts the Kaiser's remaining warships in the Atlantic, before she is called on for Grand Fleet service and aeronautical adventures. The first volume told her pre-war tale and gave an indepth study of her technical aspects. Together the three volumes when complete will tell the in depth tale of one of the most famous cruisers of both World Wars. The volumes draw on the ship's log book as well as her crew members journals, official post war accounts and volumes of secondary sources. Its heavily illustrated throughout, something only possible with the help and support of the Australian War Memorial and the countries archives.
