At the same time, it offers a valuable resource for technical personnel, university teachers and students who are engaged in port planning and design, handling process design, port machinery product design, portmachinery use and maintenance. A comprehensive guide to port handling machinery, it reflects the current state of development and application status of port machinery in China.

Author Biography:

Dexin Tao Professor Tao graduated from the Port Machinery Design and Manufacturing program at Wuhan Institute of Water Transport Engineering in 1968, taught at Wuhan Institute of Water Transport Engineering since 1980, engaged in teaching and research in the field of Port Machinery Engineering, and served as a visiting scholar on a public mission from 1983 to 1985, studying mechanical fatigue strength and gear transmission at the Engineering Department of Hiroshima University in Japan. In 1997, he served as a professor and doctoral supervisor.  The main research directions include Design Theory of Lifting Machinery, Testing Technology of Lifting Transport Machinery, Fatigue Strength and Failure Analysis of Mechanical Structures, Wind Load Calculation and Wind Safety Technology of Cranes, etc. He successively participated in research projects such as the National Seventh Five Year Plan, the National Development Commission’s Major New Product Development, the National 863 Plan Project, and the National Science and Technology Support Program Plan of the Ministry of Science and Technology. He once obtained the third prize of the National Technical Invention Award (Development of Scissor Type Double Arm High Tower Joint Working Machine, 1997), the second prize of the China Navigation Science and Technology Award (Research on High Technical Performance of Steel Wire Rope Transmission Parts, 2005), the third prize of the Hubei Province Science and Technology Progress Award (Development of Steel Wire Rope Pulley Fully Automatic Fatigue Testing Machine, 2003), and the China Maritime Science and Technology Third Prize (Research on Container Terminal Machinery Dispatching and Diagnosis System Based on Wireless LAN, 2007), one each. He used to be the Editor in Chief “Port Crane Transportation Design Manual” Chap. 3 “Crane Components,” “Testing Technology for Hoisting and Conveying Machinery,” and three other textbooks and works.  The main academic positions he has held include Vice Chairman of the China Construction Machinery Society, Chairman of the Port Machinery Branch of the China Construction Machinery Society, Vice Chairman of the Logistics Engineering Branch of the Chinese Mechanical Engineering Society, Chairman of the Logistics Engineering Branch of the Hubei Province Mechanical Engineering Society, Chief Editor of the Port Operation magazine, etc. Yunfu Yan Yan has been engaged in the research and development and technical management of port machinery, marine engineering and equipment, with 37 years of experience, including automation of port loading and unloading operation systems and intelligent manufacturing of port and marine engineering and equipment. He received a Bachelor’s degree and EMBA from SMU in China, a MEM degree from SJTU in China, and a MEM degree from QUT in Australia. He served as the Executive Director, Senior Vice President, and Chief Engineer of Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. (ZPMC) for a long time. He also serves as the deputy director of the Long Bridge National Engineering Research Center, the director of the Shanghai Port Mechanical Engineering Technology Research Center, and the deputy director of the academic technology committees of three key laboratories for Shipping Technology and Control Engineering Transportation Industry, the Port Logistics Equipment and Control Engineering Transportation Industry, and the Mechanical Automation and Robotics of Shanghai. He also serves as a technology review expert for the nation, the Ministry of Transport, Shanghai municipality, the China Port Association, the China Heavy Machinery Association, and other institutions. He received special allowance from the State Council, was included in the first batch of leading talents in Shanghai, and was awarded the Special Contribution Award for Creating Excellent Brands in Shanghai in 2006.  Yan has successfully led more than ten national, provincial, and municipal science and technology research and development projects, including the National 863 Plan. He has also led three national key new products, won one special prize and one second prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award and two first prizes of the Shanghai Science and Technology Progress Award. As the deputy editor in chief, he participated in the compilation of five monographs such as Quayside Container Cranes and published six journal papers such as “Container Port Loading and Unloading Technology That Can Improve Operation Efficiency,” “Probe into on the Development Trend for Super Panama Quayside Container Cranes,” and “Approach for High Reliability and Lifetime Warranty in Designing.” Dashan Dong Professor Dong obtained a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Engineering from Shanghai Maritime University and a Doctor’s degree in Engineering from Tongji University. He has served as the Chairman of the Professor Committee of the School of Logistics Engineering at Shanghai Maritime University and the Director of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Shanghai Maritime University. He has also served as the Vice Chairman of the Crane Structure Special Committee of the Chinese Mechanical Engineering Society, the Vice Chairman of the Port Machinery Branch of the China Construction Machinery Society, and the editorial board member of the journal Computer-Aided Engineering. He won one second prize and two third prizes of the Shanghai Science and Technology Award as the first adult, one first prize of the Shanghai Teaching Achievement Award, and one China Baosteel Education Award. He edited Port Cranes (2014) and Metal Structures of Crane Machinery (2011), participated in the compilation of Design Manual for Port Crane Transportation Machinery and Design Specification for Port Cranes, and published over 40 journal papers.  Professor Dong has been engaged in teaching and research in universities for a long time and has rich experience in welding and fatigue issues of steel structures, including welding calculation and inspection, residual life assessment of structures based on fracture mechanics, research on the ultimate bearing capacity of thin-walled structures, and failure analysis of ribbed plates containing fatigue phenomena.  Professor Dong and his team have a long-term cooperation with Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. (ZPMC) and have participated in structural design, calculation, or technical consulting for over 100 projects from 1993 to 2019. Professor Dong also has extensive exchanges and cooperation with multiple coastal port enterprises in China, providing professional consulting and evaluation services for the lifting equipment of each port. Dewen Zhang Researcher Zhang graduated from Dalian University of Technology with a Master’s degree in Engineering Machinery in April 1992. He later worked at China Waterborne Transport Research Institute and was promoted to a researcher in 2003. Previously held positions such as Deputy Director and Chief Engineer of the Process and Equipment Center, Executive Deputy Director of the Key Laboratory of Port Logistics Equipment and Control Engineering Transportation Industry, and Secretary General of the Jib Crane Subcommittee of the National Technical Committee for Standardization of Cranes. He serves as a review expert for the nation, the Ministry of Transport, and the Standardization Administration. Researcher Zhang’s main research directions include port technology and equipment, oil spill emergency response technology and equipment, maritime rescue and salvage technology and equipment, standardization and measurement technology, etc. He led and participated in more than 70 such as National Science and Technology Support Program Projects, National Key Research and Development Program Projects, provincial and ministerial level scientific research projects, and more than 200 corporate projects. He developed more than 10 new products such as various port machinery, lifting machinery, continuous machinery, mobile machinery, engineering ships, and oil spill emergency equipment. He led and participated in the development of over 90 standards and metrological technical specifications, of which more than 20 were completed by the first person. Zhang has received more than 20 science and technology awards at the provincial and ministerial levels, including 8 first prizes and 8 second prizes at the provincial and ministerial levels.  Researcher Zhang is the editor in chief of Smart Green Container Terminal and Comparative Research on Domestic and Foreign Standard Technologies of Crane Machinery. He has participated in over 10 works such as “Design Specifications for Port Cranes” and published over 130 journal papers. He served as a member of the editorial board of the magazines Hoisting and Conveying Machinery and Port Operation and served as vice chairman, executive director, committee member, secretary general, and expert in more than 20 standardization technical committees, societies, and other institutions.
