Health Promotion and Education: Content and Curriculum focuses on best practices in school and community health education. Topics of subsequent chapters include: Prevention Strategies in School and Community Programs Best Practices in School and Community Health Education Curriculum Basics for Schools and Communities Building and Implementing School and Community Health Education Curricula School and Community Health Education Instruction Assessment and Evaluation of School and Community Health Education Curricula As students read through the book they will learn about models of prevention, target population characteristics, administrative support, maximizing participation, the factors that influence learning, and numerous other subjects that are vital in developing successful school and community health education curricula. Future school and community educators will benefit from the practical skills that are included: writing learning objectives; implementing teaching strategies; using graphic organizers; planning lessons; creating rubrics; and assessing and evaluating progress. All chapters teach key vocabulary and feature summaries and review activities to enhance comprehension and retention of the material. Health Promotion and Education can be used in courses on school and/or community health education curriculum and methodology, and those that teach best practices in health education.

Author Biography

Jolynn Gardner earned her Ph.D. in community health education at The Ohio State University. Dr. Gardner is Director of Public Health at American University in Washington, D.C. She coordinates the program and teaches and advises students majoring in Public Health. She is certified by the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing as a health education specialist, and by the American College of Sports Medicine as a health and fitness instructor. In addition to stress management, Dr. Gardner's professional interests include college student health, nutrition, drug abuse prevention, and coping with grief and loss. Dr. Robert Wandberg is the diverse learner literacy coach and a school health education curriculum consultant for the Columbia Heights Public School System in Minnesota. He provides classroom teachers with effective, best-practice strategies for working with a variety of students, including English language learners, special education students, low-literacy learners, and gifted and talented learners. A former health education classroom teacher, as well as a former state health education curriculum director with the Minnesota Department of Education, he has presented at the state, national, and international levels. Dr. Wandberg has published several articles in professional journals, as well as textbooks for middle school, high school, and university students.
