Hobby Master: 1/72 McDonnell Douglas F-15D Eagle 86–0181/MO Model
In 1967 the U.S. became aware of the Soviet MiG-25 Foxbat. This made it
necessary to develop
a new aircraft to counter the MiG-25. The USAF rejected the USN F-14 Tomcat
and issued its
own requirements. The solution came in the form of the McDonnell-Douglas (now
Boeing) F-15
Eagle. The F-15A made its inaugural flight in July 1972 and in January
1976 the first Eagle
entered service. The “E” entered service in 1989. The F-15 was the first
dedicated USAF air
superiority fighter since the F-86 Sabre.
McDonnell Douglas F-15D 86–0181 was built as c/n 990/DO61. June 1,
1943 saw the activation
of the 390th FS/366th FG, eventually becoming the 390th FS/366th FW and calling
Mountain
Home AFB, Idaho home in 1982 until 2010. Since 1965 the 390th FS “Wild
Boars”, “Blue Boars”
while in Vietnam, have flown F-4’s, F-111’s and in 1992 received F-15C/D
which they continued
to fly until 2010 when they moved to NAS Whidbey Island, Washington. The 390th
FS have taken
part in WWII, Vietnam, “Operation Just Cause” and “Operation Desert
