Description

The important premise of this book is that the architects, as coordinators of the building design, must know the principles of the HVAC design and how the HVAC systems can be integrated into the building architectural design at minimum cost and without affecting the aesthetics. Architectural engineers will also find this book useful as the study of the HVAC is part of their curriculum and the book contains the necessary knowledge about HVAC, written in an easy-to-understand manner. This book could also be used by the young Architects preparing for the AIA examination. Specific details about integration of HVAC systems into the architecture of the building are included, such as: - How to position the air outlets for uniform distribution of air; - How to save energy through architectural features of the building; - How to select HVAC systems alternatives from technical point of view; - How to arrive at the best alternative through economic evaluations with emphasis on an abbreviated Life Cycle Cost analysis technique.

Author Biography:

Dr. Alexandra Dragan, a registered Professional Engineer, has participated in hundreds of HVAC projects totaling millions of square feet: HVAC design, energy conservation analysis, solar energy, co-generation, thermal storage, life cycle cost analysis, indoor air quality analysis, engineering standards, design and operation manuals, value engineering, peer-review, research, etc., notably the design of the HVAC systems at San Diego Convention Center. As a design reviewer for Los Angeles County for over 23 years, Dr. Dragan brought savings of millions of dollars in investment costs, energy costs, and maintenance costs for County's projects. Dr. Dragan has published several technical papers and she is co-author of the handbook Thermal Processes and Power Generation in the Wood Processing Industry, and a major contributor for the ASHRAE handbook HVAC Design Manual for Hospitals and Clinics. Major work recognitions include: - ASHRAE Symposium Paper Award for the paper Comparative Analysis of HVAC Systems That Minimize the Risk of Airborne Disease Transmission, 2001. - AAAS-EPA Environmental Science and Engineering Fellowship awarded by the American Association for Advancement of Science, 1992. - Value Engineering Award granted by the County of Los Angeles, 1989.
