An ostomy is where a small part of the large or small intestine is pulled out to assist with defecation with a bag attached over and around the ostomy as the large bowl (the colon) or the small intestine (ileum) are not working correctly. The journey to any ostomy is a bumpy one and is sometimes sprung on people who wake from surgery with no idea of what or how to manage life with an ostomy.I was lucky enough to have the choice of an ileostomy or an internal 'J' pouch.
