Author Biography:

Michele Ford is Professor of Southeast Asian Studies and Director of the Sydney Southeast Asia Centre at the University of Sydney, where she holds an Australian Research Council Future Fellowship. She is the author of Workers and Intellectuals: NGOs, Trade Unions and the Indonesian Labour Movement. Eric Tagliacozzo is Professor of History at Cornell University. He is the Director of the Comparative Muslim Societies Program, the Director of the Cornell Modern Indonesia Project, and is coeditor of Cornell's journal Indonesia. He is the author of Secret Trades, Porous Borders: Smuggling and States Along a Southeast Asian Frontier and The Longest Journey: Southeast Asians and the Pilgrimage to Mecca.
