Description

Mozambique is a country on the east coast of Southern Africa, bounded by: Tanzania to the north; to the northwest, Malawi and Zambia; to the west, Zimbabwe, South Africa and Swaziland; to the south, South Africa; to the east, the section of the Indian Ocean known as the Mozambique Channel. In the Mozambique Channel, neighbors are Madagascar and the Comoros (including the French possession of Mayotte). In the Indian Ocean, east of the large island of Madagascar, are the dependencies of Runion, Juan de Nova and Isla Europa. In the Mozambique Channel, roughly halfway between the mainland and Madagascar, is the atoll of Bassas da India, also a French possession. The capital of Mozambique is Maputo. The northern half (north of the Zambezi River) is a large plateau, with a small coastal plain bordered by coral reefs, bordering the interior with mountain massifs belonging to the Great Rift Valley system. The southern half is characterized by a wide alluvial coastal plain, covered by savannas and cut by the valleys of several rivers, the most important of which is the Limpopo River.
