Truly a frontier town when it was founded in 1839, Iowa City was created to become the new capital of Iowa Territory. Author Tom Schulein has been researching and speaking widely on Iowa City history for over a decade. Tom Schulein has been researching and speaking widely on Iowa City history for over a decade. A 44-year resident of Iowa City and a retired associate professor of dentistry, he also researches typewriter and sewing machine history and loves all things mechanical. He and his wife of 55 years have two grown sons.
