Nate Cash is an ex-Air Force public information specialist. During a tour of duty at the Pentagon, he is drummed out of the service in disgrace because of an indiscretion unbecoming an officer and gentleman. After six months of inactivity, he accepts an invitation to visit an old friend in Arkansas. A short time after arriving, he unwittingly makes a discovery that puts his life in jeopardy. Nate is a seasoned writer, but words can't protect him against bullets. Nevertheless, he presses on to uncover the facts about an unsolved crime which took place decades ago. The case, long since placed in a cold case file, is reopened - causing those responsible for the crime to take extreme measures to make sure the crime remains unsolved. The local law enforcement officials are dragging their feet, and Cash gets little or no cooperation from the town folk. Undaunted, he uncovers a trail of incriminating evidence involving persons serving in the lowest to the highest levels of government. Those in power have everything to lose and are determined to stop him.
