Description

ISABELLA I QUEEN OF SPAIN is a fiction book for both children and young adults that is based on the reign of Queen Isabella I of Castile. The story is set on the Iberian Peninsula, as it was in the fifteenth century. Debra and her cousin, David, meet in Edinburgh where they're confronted with two challenges. One is that their grandmother is going crazy over great treasures handed over to her by their late grandfather. She arrives from Ireland with her frustrations at Queen Margaret University in Edinburgh. Her daughter, Professor Jane Blake, cranks her brain, flips pages, and theorizes, but cannot solve the mystery. As the children ponder the miseries of Mrs. Bowen in the streets of Edinburgh, they have to confront another challenge. Queen of England is running late because her breakfast could not be served. The Royal Bakery of Scotland cannot deliver the Queen's cookies by a broken-down van. Debra's father, the chief baker, hands over the cookies to the children who cart them through city streets to the excluded guarded suburbs, where the Braid Burn Castle is hidden. After enjoying breakfast with the Queen, the Royal Chronicler introduces them to Court Journals from where they read a reference to Isabella I entered by King Henry VII of England. From the precincts of the castle, a Royal Ferries Wheel spans the children to the ancient Iberian Kingdoms where they arrive on the morning of King Henry IV's death. They find his cousin, Isabella, plotting against Juana, the king's daughter, and heir, in order to ascend the throne of Castile. As the Castilian War of Succession rages, among the ravages of war, the duo finds secrets to unlocking their grandmother's lost treasures. Now they will become rich by inheriting her, yet they are several centuries behind the time and space of her granny. They have to travel back to Edinburgh. Still, they face many challenges. After several decades, their grandmother may not be alive. To the relief of the Royal Chronicler, the "amazing royal wheel of thrones" returns the children safely. After a fresh treasure hunt in Ireland, at the rural home of their grandmother, David's auntie, the Professor of Philosophy, celebrates them as teachers to the delight of their crazily dancing granny.
