Description

Joseph Chamberlain (1836-1914) was the first industrialist to enter the highest sphere in British politics. He was born and bred for manufacturing industry, and he was outstandingly successful at it. By the beginning of the 20th Century he was by all accounts the first minister of the British Empire, though he was never made Prime Minister. Chamberlain tackled politics as would an entrepeneur, venture by venture, innovative of organisation as well as product, alert to the importance of accounting and marketing. Marsh argues that Chamberlain's experience in industry enabled him to present fresh responses to many of the questions which confronted the leaders of Britain between the passage of the Second Reform Act and the outbreak of the First World War, and says that the industrial underpinnings of Chamberlain's politics sometimes distorted his vision. His commitment was always to an enterprise, rather than to a political party which could lead to arguments and conflicts, as well as to his often-dramatic changes of policy. This is a fascinating and even-handed biography of one of the most absorbing figures of British politics.
