Author Biography:

Holder of a European doctorate in law and of a Canadian Ph.D in Criminology, her research interests lie in the policies and practices of detention by the State, including the ill-treatment and torture of prisoners. Dr Chartrand is Associate Professor in the Sociology Department at Bishop’s University, Québec. She is also Adjunct Professor in the Department of Criminology at the University of Ottawa. Jennifer M. Kilty is Associate Professor of Criminology at the University of Ottawa. The author of numerous articles and chapters, Dr. Kilty is also co-editor of Demarginalizing Voices: Commitment, Emotion, and Action in Qualitative Research (2014).
