Description

Journey into Darkness relates the irony and tragedy of twin brothers caught up in World War II on opposite sides and how Adolf Hitler's dramatic rise to power in a defeated Germany influenced a young American to join the German army. What circumstances caused the one twin to travel to Germany for graduate study even with the threat of war and then to remain after the outbreak of hostilities in a potentially hostile environment? What was his fate and that of his twin brother who joins the American army and narrates the story? Laced with thought-provoking interpretations and commentaries, the novel draws heavily on historical events, accounts of Germans who experienced the war firsthand and archival information provided by the cities of Berlin, Hamburg and Kiel and the National Archives of the United States.

Author Biography:

Lowell W. Culver has studied European history and followed political developments in Germany for over half a century. He was a Fulbright exchange scholar at the University of Hamburg and, later, an exchange professor at the University of Oldenburg. Other than this study of German totalitarianism, he has authored an account of state (Land) and national elections held in Germany between 1946 and 2011 under the title The Road to Democracy in Germany (University Press of America, 2012). He and his wife share time between the United States and Germany. He holds a doctorate in Political Science from the University of Southern California.
