The dragoners have studied them for generations and left their wisdom contained in old books - which is how Haydn, the last dragoner, and his father identify an unusual dragon - the rarest dragon ever known, and the most dangerous... Elfridie, Princess of the kingdom, has always longed for independence and adventure. When her father is stricken by a poisoned arrow, however, Elfridie is thrust into a world of myth and magic, in which she must use all her wits to find the goddess-birds of the island, and persuade them to give her an antidote...
