She explores the similarities and differences between western and non-western approaches to objects, museums, and curation, revealing how what is culturally appropriate in one context may not be in another. The book also undermines the argument that non-western people are not concerned with preserving their cultural property - an argument that has been used to justify its collection and retention in museums.
