Description

This book presents over 900 biographical sketches of scenic designers who worked on Broadway between the 1915-16 and 1989-90 theatre seasons. The entries provide background and professional information, ending with chronological lists of Broadway credits in scenic design and, as relevant, lighting and costume design. Winners of the major awards for scenic design are listed in appendixes, a selective bibliography is included, and an index provides access to the designers from the play titles. Over 400 individuals who designed lighting are profiled here in biographical sketches, each accompanied by a chronological listing of Broadway credits for lighting and for scenic and costume design when relevant. An introduction traces the development of the profession on Broadway, and a section of illustrations reproduces 15 designer renderings spanning the period of coverage, from a design of Robert Edmond Jones for a 1915 production to one by Tony Award winner Tony Walton for "The Grand Hotel" (1989). This volume should prove of interest to researchers and professionals in lighting design, stage design and theatre history generally.
