Description

Set over seven hills by the mighty Rio Tejo, Lisbon mixes 17th-century grandeur with an easygoing lifestyle, suburban food and wine venues, and a vibrant contemporary art and music scene. Skip the lines for Portuguese tarts, dodge the Tram 28 crowds and instead step inside this deeply historic and fast-booming city. Sip uma bicas (espresso) and share pataniscas (cod fritters) with the Lisboetas at neighbourhood cafes and tascas, wander the pavements past exquisitely tiled facades, and party until dawn in dark fado dens, sun-kissed rooftop bars and pulsing dockside nightclubs. Lisbon Pocket Precincts is your curated guide to the city’s best cultural, shopping, eating and drinking experiences, and its most accessible and budget-friendly choices. Each precinct takes in one or more of Lisbon’s traditional districts with insider reviews of both outstanding attractions and hidden gems, as well as easy-to-use maps. A selection of field trips also encourages you to venture further afield, to the natural beauty of Sintra and Comporta, as well as the beautiful northern city of Porto. Slip this guide into your pocket and head off on your Lisbon adventure, experiencing all that this fascinating city has to offer.

Author Biography:

Lisbon's maritime history, postcolonial cultural mix and progressive politics drew Donna Wheeler in many years ago and has continued to fascinate. She returned recently to witness a city in the throes of rapid transformation; this latest research trip allowed her to explore that 'new' Lisbon in exquisite depth, as well as really reacquaint herself with the vibrant, multilayered city, and the food, wine, music and architecture, that she has always loved. This book comes after writing on Paris for Hardie Grant's Precincts and Pocket Precincts series, as well as twelve years writing guidebooks and features on Italy, France, North Africa, Belgium, Austria and Norway for Lonely Planet. She's also a DK Travel author and has written on contemporary art, architecture and design for various international publishers and she is a frequent contributor to the Telegraph UK's travel section. Sydney born and bred, Melbourne domiciled for a few decades, she divides her time between Sydney, Paris' 11th, an imaginary masseria in Puglia and whichever other destination has currently cast its spell on her.
