I'm not really a big fan of the whole “roots music” thing that has exploded in NZ in recent years. But, the first time I heard this back in 2005, I couldn't help but be blown away by the laid back, spontaneous, and earthy vibe present on this rather unique and interesting live album. The personnel playing here reads like an elite hit-squad who's who of the local music scene, with the music varying from folk balladry through to loose reggae through to alt-country. Barnaby Weir is a breath of fresh air too. Rather than aping the singing accent of English or American vocalists, as so many Kiwi singers are prone to doing, Weir sings with a voice that is unmistakably that of a New Zealander, and a laid back, beach, BBQ, and beer sounding one at that. The perfect summer album, no matter where you are or what the season!
