Description

Memoirs is the assured debut album from brand new Rough Trade Records signing, UK singer Rox.

The half-Jamaican, half-Iranian Roxanne Tataei brings conviction to your soundsystem with an album packed with heartfelt soul music, a powerful “genuine” soul voice & tales of a life spent really living. The latest in a line of young Brits sprucing up the poppy soul of the 1960s (Winehouse, Duffy, Adele), Rox’s songs concern themselves with relationships, her vocals are elegant & she never wastes a note, whether the song is a trip hop weepie, a Motown-influenced dancefloor filler or even rocksteady reggae.

Memoirs was produced by Commissioner Gordon (Lauryn Hill, Damien Marley, KRS One) in New Jersey, in the US & with Al Shux (co-writer & producer of Jay-Z’s massive hit Empire State Of Mind) in London. Rox has had 2 singles - No Going Back & My Baby Left Me - released in Europe, with great radio support. Her 3rd single, I Don’t Believe, has just been released & the video is getting heaps of hits on youtube.

Rox has appeared on tours with Mark Ronson (filling in for a certain Amy Winehouse) & Daniel Merriweather, & on such TV shows as Later… With Jools Holland. Rox has also appeared at the Reading & Leeds Festivals with Wiley & BBC Electric Proms with Nitin Sawhney. Rox cites Portishead’s album Dummy, early Lauryn Hill & Joni Mitchell as her key influences. Though Memoirs may not reinvent the wheel, Rox has delivered an impressive debut of incredibly catchy pop music.
