I had a feeling I was going to see another “Wicker man” and though there are parallels this very much stands on it's own. It's a movie about a solstice cult in Sweden and what starts out as a benign sun worship/mother nature community soon turns into something darker; much darker. It has moments which are decidedly uncomfortable with graphic scenes that stitch together a story that you feel should be predictable but somehow isn't. The last time a movie made me feel this uncomfortable was Joaquin Pheonix's Joker. At 2 hrs 50min you barely notice the length which is always a good sign. This won't be for everyone, it doesn't boast a mega budget and isn't packed with action but as a psychological thriller it definitely gets under the skin. Well worth a look.

Description

Let the festivities begin…

Dani and Christian are a young American couple with a relationship on the brink of falling apart. But after a family tragedy keeps them together, a grieving Dani invites herself to join Christian and his friends on a trip to a once – in – a – lifetime midsummer festival in a remote Swedish village. What begins as a carefree summer holiday in a land of eternal sunlight takes a sinister turn when the insular villagers invite their guests to partake in festivities that render the pastoral paradise increasingly unnerving and viscerally disturbing. From the visionary mind of Ari Aster comes a dread – soaked cinematic fairytale where a world of darkness unfolds in broad daylight.

"I was never, even for one second, feeling the length… I found it so unsettling and sinister. At moments it was a little uneven, but it's so watchable and gets under your skin in a really creepy way.: - FilmWeek (KPCC – NPR Los Angeles)

""Midsommar" isn't just a great horror movie… It is also one of the best movies ever made about living with mental illness." - Salon.com
