Description

Using a theoretical and empirical perspective in a comparative setting, this text aims to further understanding of processes affecting diversity in higher education. The theoretical part of the text outlines three distinct but complimentary perspectives: the effects of continued specialization at the disciplinary level; the possible homogenizing forces of the nation state and the emergent supra-national structures in Europe; and the effects of the environment on institutional and system diversity. The empirical part contains eight country studies, which provide detailed insights into the processes that have affected differentiation. The concluding chapter is an analysis of the conditions which influence change within higher education, and what the effects of these changes are in terms of diversity.
