Author Biography:

Virginia Woolf (1882-1941), an English writer, is considered one of the major literary figures of the twentieth century. Her groundbreaking novels, including Jacob's Room, Mrs. Dalloway, and To the Lighthouse, revolutionized storytelling. Woolf also examined urgent social and political issues in shorter fiction, widely discussed provocative essays, and in posthumously published letters and diaries. She was at the center of The Bloomsbury Group, a circle of seminal writers, artists, and intellectuals who created new paradigms for life during a time of great cultural, economic, and political upheaval. Her work and life have inspired some of the most compelling novels, plays, operas, films, and visual art of our time. Ulrich Baer is University Professor at New York University, a graduate of Harvard and Yale, and the recipient of Guggenheim, Getty, and Humboldt fellowships. He has written new introductions to many classic works of world literature, including Mrs. Dalloway and To the Lighthouse, and published widely on poetry, fiction, and photography.
