The third time was indeed the charm for the WBOP Magic, as they completed a fairytale run to win the 2012 ANZ Championship, defeating the Melbourne Vixens 41–38.

In a thrilling contest at Hisense Arena, the Magic finally got over the hump, after falling at the final hurdle twice in previous sea-sons. Trailing until midway through the fourth quarter, the Magic were inspired by veteran scorer Irene Van Dyk. Van Dyk top-scored, shooting 25 of 26 including the final goal of the match. The Magic brought the ANZ Championship across the Tasman for the first time despite losing their first four games of the season. The 12-game winning streak to get to this historic match was un-doubtedly topped off by this brilliant performance.
