This book discusses the issues which are the basis of the art of medicine and the underpinning of modern medical practice. In producing this, his second book in the 'New Frontiers in Medicine' series, Craig Hassed has managed to combine three of his passions - philosophy, mind-body medicine and evidence based practice in exploring some of the most challenging and thought provoking issues that face not only medical practitioners and health workers, but the community at large. Medical wisdom encompasses both science and the search for truth and philosophy - the search for meaning. In each of the chapters in this book, Craig examines both and emphasises that our understanding of discoveries in molecular biology need not be mutually exclusive from our appreciation of the human spirit. Unlike other texts which are predominantly medical or predominantly philosophical, Craig is able to draw on his deep knowledge of both, to weave thought provoking discussion supported by abundant references. As an academic and physician, Craig has always been prepared to push intellectual boundaries in traditionally conservative medical institutions. Interestingly, many of our medical curricula are now catching up with Craig as holistic medicine and ethics are increasingly embedded in most contemporary courses.
