A tale of what could have happened
Shute wrote this novel in 1957. With incredible foresight he has described an event that scares modern society. An excellent novel.
An over looked writer, I think. Most famous for ‘A Town Like Alice’, but he wrote other good books as well, like this one. It's a story about the end of the world after a massive nuclear war. But it's told from a very human perspective amoung the main characters. It could in fact be one of the very first such stories, as it is written in the late 1950's. As such, some of the science and technical details are a bit iffy, but the story is so good you can forgive him that. Quite a sad and moving story, if you are of an emotional disposition then it may pay to have some tissues at hand. Well worth a read, from an old school author who knows the art of quality writing.
