Description

This book contains the translation of "Intisar al-faqir al-salik li-tarjih madhhab al-Imam al-kabir Malik", which was written by al-Ra'i, a ninth-century Andalusian scholar. This text explains the basis of "madhhab" (school of law) and serves as a background for further enquiries into the nature of the Maliki "madhhab". In this book, Yasin Dutton puts the ongoing controversy about "madhhab", particularly the Maliki "madhhab" and its 'pre-"madhhab'" Madinan origins, on a surer footing. The first part of the book consists of a introduction, giving background information on al-Ra'i and his life and times, discussing the content and significance of the "Intisar", providing general information on the Maliki "madhhab" and its origins and a discourse on certain key issues relating to the subject in contemporary Islamic studies. Part two consists of a fully annotated translation of the al-Ra'i text.
