Description

Author Gerald Conteh has produced a new collection of ten stories aimed at the adult fiction audience that have edgy and sometimes supernatural themes set in neighborhoods in Brooklyn, New York. "Out of Brooklyn" showcases the cultural diversity of New York City's most densely populated borough while weaving daring tales about former KGB, gypsies, and mind-influencing dolls. The opening tale, "Queen's Treasure" documents the legacy of several gypsy families who come together in the Canarsie neighborhood to trade silver coins for the stones that had been held for them by the late Queen Persida. When the Queen's direct descendant, Carmella, turns 13, the secret location of the stones is revealed to Suli, her grandmother, who wields her power in the community to keep Carmella and the treasure out of the wrong hands. In "Lucky's Bones," Mr. Martinez hires out his amateur archeology students to clean a vacant lot as a means of earning money for the group's future digs. When the high school students uncover several human bones, a search for the victim and a murderer ensues. What is revealed is a disturbing family secret that led to the ruined life of one child and the death of another. A gadget handy peeping Tom is discovered in "People's Justice." Bobby is a computer expert deficient of an ethical foundation (courtesy of his father) who finds a myriad of ways to con and spy on the innocent. When tapes of his handiwork appear on video store shelves, his community takes aggressive action. "Little Julian" is the story of sweet looking dolls that conjure up violent, destructive thoughts and actions in their youthful owners. After several fast food restaurants receive boxes of free Julian dollsto give away, many agreeable, well mannered children begin to take physical revenge against their playmates or wish curses on whole families that come to fruition. The children communicate with the dolls who direct their actions. An attentive school psychologist gets to the root of the problem right before facing his own dire straits. This collection builds nicely on the history and geography of Brooklyn; providing the reader with vivid details of the area and the people who inhabit it. The author is skilled at building the action in the stories and often creates amazing scenarios for the characters to stumble through. While the stories are very much plot and character driven, there are also many gory and supernatural events to hold the reader's attention. "Out of Brooklyn" is a compilation of challenging, dramatic tales as diverse as the community they represent
