Renowned artist, Kelly Stribling Sutherland, and university professor, KD Chapman, have teamed up to create a delightful early reader, Pat the Bat. The beautifully illustrated story is inspired by a project that Chapman and his young daughters worked on many years ago when they were just beginning to read. Building early vocabulary with simple sentence structure and intuitive rhymes will engage children as they read about Pat and his friends. Colorful artwork accompanies the story, guiding readers through the imaginary world of Pat the Bat.
Author Biography
Kent Chapman grew up in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, the home of Little League Baseball. He graduated from Lycoming College, a small liberal arts college, where he discovered a passion for science. Kent earned a Ph.D. degree in plant biology from Arizona State University, conducted post-doctoral research in biochemistry at Louisiana State University, and currently holds the rank of Regents Professor of Biochemistry at the University of North Texas. His enthusiasm for children's literature paralleled his experiences as a father of two lovely daughters, and "Pat the Bat" was a project that he and his two daughters, Claire and Meredith, worked on while they were young students at a Montessori school in Denton, Texas. Chapman has authored many scientific publications, but "Pat the Bat" is his first foray into children's books. For the last 23 years, Kent and his wife Kerrie have called Denton, Texas their home. The two are blessed to have many family members nearby in Texas, and some a bit farther away in Pennsylvania, Arizona, and Oklahoma. Kelly Stribling Sutherland, a graduate of California's Art Center College of Design, works as a freelance illustrator from her home in Denton, Texas. She credits her love for children's books and her admiration of fine artists - such as Chagall, Degas, Monet, Munch and many others - in shaping her style. Kelly remembers drawing on the box lids of her Madame Alexander dolls as a first surface to explore her creativity. Her first landscape at age four looked more like a bear, and so her love of whimsy began. Kelly is currently spreading her love for art to her elementary school students in Little Elm, Texas, where she has taught for 10 years. She is the mother to two wonderful children, Robert and Mandi, who are off on their own adventures in college - Robert, as a 2016 graduate of the Naval Academy and a new Ensign in the Navy, and Mandi beginning her senior year at a New York City university. Kelly and her husband Brian enjoy taking care of their dog Barkley, cooking, traveling to see their kids and spending time with family. Kelly is excited about discovering the world of children's book illustration with Pat the Bat.
