Description

The aim of this brief work is to bring together the doctrines of Plato's philosophy on Knowledge and to state them in the most concise form and in the most positive terms. Its intention is naturally not to compel belief or to establish conviction. The dialogues of Plato are based upon an incalculable number of his own observations and experiences, and no one who has not repeated those experiences and thoughts upon himself or discussed with others is in a position to arrive at an independent judgement of Epistemology. The present work, I believe, meets a generally felt want which I myself up to now have not been a position to satisfy - the wish namely, for a concise presentation of the elements of Plato's philosophical dialogues.I have taken this difficult task upon myself with this result, having succeeded in giving an account free from the ballast of technical particulars. This constitutes a synopsis that includes or at least touches upon all essential points, so that it is possible for the reader to orient himself readily wherever needful. The present work has grown out of a few discussions held before a group of philosophers, psychologist, physicians, and educators. The somewhat friendly reception accorded this discussions, repeated wishes to see it printed, and essentially the continually growing interest of the wider public in Plato's philosophy have moved me to publish it in suitably altered and supplemented form as a brief introduction to Plato's Epistemology. This presentation of the elements of his philosophy is intended to give concise picture of the central content of his thoughts and his extraordinary voluminous work. To describe in all fullness a man's lifework, the fruit of about sixty-five years' of questioning and answering, in a few pages is a practically impossible task. But even such a glance will be able to convey something of the strange power of the thought-structure that has been erected by this great scientist, mathematician and above all a thinker, which may be regarded as a fundamental and revolutionising significance for our knowledge.
